Kind of awesome that my daughter hangs with Ruth Reichl, Eric Asimov, and Jane Stern. Remember when we drove across the country before your senior year at Wesleyan, stopping at every Road Food recommendation that we could?

Phyllis & Warren: That's too bad. It sounds like you ran into communication problems. The staff at the location we visited did not appear to be English-speaking. Luckily, we had Matcha to demonstrate everything to us.

We ate at the Omen near Yasaka Pagoda on our last day in kyoto. We did not have the same experience - no instructions - we had to ask what the bowl of broth was for and didn't get a particularly helpful answer. Also we were both needing cold noodles (it was a warm day) and were given hot noodles. At the end of the meal, we were not feeling so good.
